SIGNS OF TROUBLE
The following are signs of possible
trouble. To ensure the safety of your vehicle
and your family, don't ignore the warnings your car is
giving you. Have these
potentially serious problems checked out right away.
Dashboard Warning Lights:
Be aware of the warning lights on your vehicle's
instrument panel: Engine, Oil, Temperature. If any warning
lights are lit or the
gauges are out of their normal range, it may indicate
a problem with the battery,
alternator, brakes, engine temperature, or oil pressure.
Tires: The thumping of a
tire indicates that a flaw has developed and the tire
may become flat or blow out. Jiggling at certain speeds
can indicate that a tire is
out of balance.
Brakes: These are signs of brake
trouble: Squealing or scraping sound when
you apply the brakes. Brake pedal being either spongy or hard.
Brake pedal
sinking slowly to the floor after the vehicle has stopped.
Engine: Some common signs of engle trouble: Engine
turns over, but does not
start. Engine hesitation, stalling or surging. Engine
keeps chugging after the
ignition has been turned off. Knocks or pings from the engine
when accelerating
or climbing a hill.
Oil: If it is necessary to add
oil to the engine between oil changes, there may be
problem that needs to be checked out.
Muffler: A roaring, rumbling or
hissing sound from the muffler may indicate a
hole or crack in the muffler or exhaust system.
Steering: Loose or sloppy steering
can indicate a problem with the
steering system.
Leaks: Check the odor and
color of the leaking fluid: Most people recognize the
smell of gasoline. Coolant/Antifreeze smells sweet and is generally
green, pink,
or yellow. Engine oil or steering fluid is usually brownish-black
oil. Manual
Transmission fluid is black and oozy. Automatic transmission
fluid is a reddish
oily film. Air conditioning fluid is usually clear. |
